What is borderline personality disorder?

Borderline personality disorder is a psychological condition where a person has difficulty controlling his emotions. This condition, also known as threshold personality disorder, is generally characterized by sudden changes in mood, insecurity, and difficulty establishing social relationships.

BDP is a disorder that can make the sufferer almost always feel worried, inferior (inferior), and fearful.

It’s only natural that you feel anxious when you make important decisions. However, if you continue to feel that way even when there are no obvious triggers, what you are experiencing may be symptoms of borderline personality disorder.

Imagine the time when you gathered with your family. Your family is having fun chatting while laughing freely. Suddenly you just feel sad and frantic, why can’t you enjoy the atmosphere like the others? Eventually, you blame and hate yourself.

Another example, when you and a friend have an agreement to watch a movie together in the cinema. Unfortunately, your friend canceled the appointment.

Even if your friend cancels an appointment because there is something important, you can’t control the negative thought that he actually canceled because he didn’t want to go with you.

Thoughts like that that ultimately make you feel so empty and hopeless. It’s as if you are alone in this world and no one understands your feelings.

However, on the other hand, you also feel flooded by a variety of mixed negative emotions. When these feelings arise, you can explode uncontrollably.

  • Often feel difficulties in establishing and maintaining a relationship.
  • Often take action without thinking about the risk of the act.
  • Having a sense of dependency on others.
  • Perform actions that can endanger yourself, or think and plan actions that endanger yourself.
  • Having a fear of rejection or worry about feeling lonely
  • Often believe things that are not real or see or hear things that are not real.
  • Other personality disorders, such as anxiety, eating disorders (for example anorexia nervosa and bulimia) or dependence on alcohol and drugs are conditions that can be experienced by someone who has borderline personality disorder.

There may be signs or symptoms not listed above. If you have certain concerns about symptoms, please consult with your doctor.

When should I see a doctor?

You should consult a doctor as soon as possible if you feel depressed, frustrated or have the desire to hurt yourself and even others. If you procrastinate, you risk losing the best time to get treatment

BPD diagnosis

To determine whether someone has BPD or not, the doctor will begin with a discussion or medical interview with the patient about the symptoms they are experiencing. In addition, the doctor will also ask about the medical history of the patient and his family, including a history of mental disorders.

After examining the behavior or symptoms of BPD and physical examination, then the doctor will establish the diagnosis.

Cause

What causes borderline personality disorder?

Until now experts have not been able to determine the exact cause of this personality disorder. But experts believe that genetic, psychological, and social factors such as a history of abuse or torture experienced as a child have been linked to the occurrence of this personality disorder.

In addition, threshold personality disorder generally will also get worse if accompanied by other neurological disorders such as depression, anxiety, drug use and also a disturbed mood.

Risk factors

What increases my risk for experiencing this condition?

People who experience violence, abuse, or neglected children are often more susceptible to this personality disorder than people in general.

Quoted from the Mayo Clinic, several factors related to personality development can increase the risk of threshold personality disorder. Risk factors for borderline personality disorder are:

  • Heredity You may be at higher risk if close relatives, such as your mother, father, siblings, have a similar default.
  • A stressful childhood. Some people with this condition are victims of sexual or physical abuse, or are ignored during childhood.
  • If you do not have the above risk factors does not mean you will not be attacked by this disorder.

These factors are general in nature and are only used as a reference. Please consult with your specialist doctor for clearer information.

BDP Treatments

What are my treatment options for BDP?

Treatment of borderline personality disorder is psychological therapy combined with cognitive behavioral therapy.

Some forms of psychological therapy to treat BPD are:

1. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

This therapy uses an ability-based approach to teach people with BPD to control emotions, bear mental stress, and improve social relationships. DBT therapy can be done individually or also with a consultation group with a therapist.

2. Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT)

This therapy emphasizes the method of thinking before reacting. MBT helps people with BPD acknowledge their own feelings and thoughts by creating alternative points of view on the situation they face.

3. Schema-Focused Therapy

This therapy helps people with BPD recognize the needs that are not met in the early period of life that can cause negative life patterns. Therapy will focus on doing healthy ways of meeting those needs so that positive lifestyle and behaviors can be developed. Just like DBT therapy, this therapy can be done individually or in a consultation group.

4. Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) or Psychodynamic Therapy

This therapy helps people with BPD understand emotions and the difficulties they experience in developing interpersonal relationships. TFP looks at the relationship developed between people with BPD and therapists in understanding this problem. Moreover, the knowledge obtained will be implemented to the current situation.

5. General Psychiatric Management

This therapy uses case management by focusing on making events that trigger emotional distress make sense. This approach is done by considering feelings as an interpersonal context and can be integrated with medication, group therapy, counseling to the family, or even individuals.

6. Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem-Solving (STEPPS)

This therapy is group therapy that invites family members, friends, spouses, partners, or caregivers as part of this therapy that lasts for 20 weeks. STEPPS therapy is also used as an additional therapy with other psychotherapy.

BDP TreatmentsPsychotherapy can also be done by a psychiatrist. The goal of borderline personality disorder treatment is to reduce symptoms and changes in behavior and strengthen relationships with family, friends, and colleagues of patients.

Psychotherapy counseling with a psychologist or therapist can help those who have borderline personalities. Psychotherapy can be done twice a week.

The purpose of psychotherapy is to reduce actions that can endanger life, help regulate emotions, provide motivation, and help improve quality of life. Psychotherapy can be done both individually and in groups.

Based on research conducted in the journal Primary Psychiatry, those who undergo psychotherapy have a good level of progress in establishing social relationships, refraining from impulsive things and danger, and controlling emotions after six months.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is more focused on specific ways of thinking that the symptoms of the disorder in patients appear. Cognitive therapy is used to break the relationship between work-related stress and the patient’s mental response to it. The doctor will combine both types of therapy to stop the disorder in patients.

Some medications prescribed by the doctor will help patients control the stimulation that occurs and shorten cases of neurosis (eg hallucinations, delusions), help maintain mood, also reduce symptoms of sudden mood swings and depression.

What are the usual tests for this condition?

The psychiatrist will make a diagnosis based on the threshold personality disorder symptoms listed above. If you have any of these symptoms, the doctor will hold a medical diagnosis and thus will help you in choosing and setting a therapeutic schedule.

The diagnosis for this condition is usually done as an adult, not when the age of children or teenagers. This is because the symptoms that arise when children may disappear over time, when they begin to think adults.

Treatments at home

Treatment at home for BDPTreatments at home can simply start from lifestyle changes.

  3. Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment Options is full of valuable information, and I really believe we are causing many of our unknown disorders from the chemicals in our products and our foods.

You think about it each generation is experiencing more and more of these disorders, and the medical professionals are pushing medications where I feel you should try natural treatments before putting any medications into your bodies unless you have no other choice.

    Just my opinion,
    Jeff

Some food can have chemicals that can affect our mood and overall health. I also think that there are more and more people who develop new mental health but sadly many won’t realize it until it affects their life and relationships. That’s why I create this site to help raise awareness.

  4. Hey Ferra
This is a great article. Actually a little surprising for me.
I have some of these symptoms. A few years ago I had all of the symptoms. I worked on myself and got better. Still, some of them exist.
I was somehow neglected in my childhood. Always I felt like I am shadowed by siblings.
I didn’t know that this is borderline personality disorder, and it has its treatment methods both at home and with a professional. Now I know a lot about it. I will work on me again to treat this problem completely. I needed this information.
    Thanks for sharing this knowledge.
    Great job.
